US Citizens Now Keep Their Cars Longer Than Ever

How often do you look outside your car as you drive to work and see an older version of the model you drive? Older cars are staying on the road and in the market through different avenues of car sales.

The average age of vehicles on the road in the U.S. is rising, even as consumers snap up more new ones — a paradox attributable to substantial increases in reliability.

The typical car on the road in the U.S. is a record-high 11.5 years old, according to a new IHS Automotive survey.

Yet Americans are buying cars at an annualized rate of more than 17 million vehicles, marking a high not seen since before the Great Recession. In fact, U.S. vehicle owners bought 42% more cars than they scrapped in 2014, according to IHS. The number of light vehicles registered in the U.S. hit an all-time high of 257.9 million units.

How are vehicles getting older, while Americans are buying newer cars, too?

Simple: They’re either keeping the old ones along with the new ones — know anyone who bought a new car and kept their old one in the driveway? — or the vehicle made its way into the used-car market, where someone else bought it..

“Vehicles are simply lasting longer than ever before,” Mark Seng, global aftermarket practice leader at IHS Automotive, told USA TODAY. “The consumer is hanging onto their vehicle longer than ever before.”

Buy a New Car Just To Rent It Out

Manufacturers have proposed a new concept, which hasn’t been highly accepted yet. Automotive shops now recommend purchasing a new car and renting it out to other people to create another way to invest in property.

News this week that BMW’s Mini will offer buyers of its cars the chance to offset the purchase price by renting out their vehicles surely won’t find any takers. BMW itself has a similar scheme called DriveNow, which board member Peter Schwarzenbauer has said is based on the idea from accommodation sharing web site Airbnb. Ford and GM have also joined in.

Schemes that allow people who don’t own cars to rent by the hour make much sense. This allows the young, who either can’t afford to own a new car, or don’t need one very often, to get wheels for specific jobs. It also allows makers of electric cars which nobody wants to buy, to get them off dealer lots and earn some money.

If it was a scheme that allowed, say, students to rent out their old clunkers to generate enough cash to pay for running costs and then some, it might make some sense. But is there anyone in the history of the world who bought a brand new car – whether it’s a little runabout or an expensive limousine, that would ever let a stranger drive off in it? The fact that they could afford a new car in the first place means the financial incentive just isn’t there.

Volkswagen’s Technological Breakthrough

This new technology with VW’s Sport Coupe Concept GTE opens unknown opportunities in the field of automotive and biogenetic data.

The car brings auto-human interfaces to a new level in an eye-catching four-door that design chief Klaus Bischoff says shows not only a new model’s design “but also initial glimpses of a new design era.”

Under the sleek new body is an interior that features new interactive interfaces between human and machine—including the use of the driver’s biometric data and a new Active Info Display that has a 3D appearance.

VW is interfacing the car’s electronics directly with the driver based on driver biometric data. The concept determines, via a smart watch or armband for measuring the driver’s vital functions, whether to navigate a route that includes an exciting country road or a gentle route instead.

Biometric data monitoring begins as soon as the driver inputs the destination by voice or on the touchscreen—but only if the driver wants the data to be used as input for the navigation system. In this navigation mode the sole purpose is maximum driving enjoyment.

Taking a Ride with the Rare Rover SD1

Posted by admin on August 1st, 2013 in Category Automotive News, Car Fun and Humor, Odd News (no responses)

Awesome looking car, way ahead of its time! When it arrived on the automotive scene in 1976, the Rover SD1 caused nothing short of a sensation. Combining hints of Ferrari Daytona styling with a range capable engines and a spacious interior that offered more space than British cars costing many times more, the SD1 went on to sell more than 300,000 examples over the course of its lifetime.

Yet on our side of the pond, with just over 1,100 cars sold in the U.S. during a single model year, the Rover 3500 was a rare bird, indeed. Keeping one running nowadays requires quite a bit of effort, especially given the low parts supply here in America.

The connected car is quickly becoming a reality, as more vehicles offer Internet-enabled applications to bring in features and services. While its German luxury rivals Audi and BMW offer a Google Search function that allows drivers to route their findings to the navigation system, Mercedes-Benz is the only automaker that offers a full Web browser.

It’s part of the Mercedes-Benz Apps option package, which also includes in-dash access to Facebook, Yelp, news and Google Search with Street View. The Web browser is just like one you’d find on a computer, smart-phone or tablet and lets you type a URL and go to any website.
